The Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood is considered one of the academic and cultural epicenters of the world. This 1.2 square mile area in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts is packed with 36,191 people of which over 90% live in large apartment buildings. About 22,000 residents are between the ages of 18-24 and over 7,700 are foreign-born. This highly transient community consists of world-class musicians studying at Berklee College of Music, top physicians working at the Longwood Medical Hospitals, college students arriving from around the world, and a growing homeless population highlighting a poverty rate of 37.3%.
Every spring and summer, over a million passionate "members" of Red Sox nation descend on the Fenway to see their favorite baseball team at Fenway Park. Meanwhile, new high rises are being built to accommodate an influx of people moving to the area to study and work at large academic and cultural institutions and organizations which influence thought around the world. These establishments include: Harvard School of Public Health, Boston University, Northeastern University, the Huntington Theatre, New England Conservatory, Boston Arts Academy, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, MassArt, Boston Conservatory, Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Mary Baker Eddy Library, The Church of Christ Scientist, Museum of Fine Arts, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, The Forsyth Institute, Berklee College of Music, National Braille Press, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and several other small liberal arts colleges.
Amidst this urban landscape, only a dozen modest-size churches minister to the needs of Fenway's 36,000 people, and all but one speak primarily English. We consider it a privilege to serve and minister in such a dynamic and relevant area as the Fenway.
